NIMBI is the Danish Institute for Game Development

We support originality, quality and responsibility in the Danish games industry and help strengthen awareness of Danish digital games.

NIMBI is the Danish Institute for Game Development – the first of its kind in Europe. Our mission is to give more people access to innovative Danish games – while promoting originality, quality and responsibility across the Danish games industry.

Through funding, partnerships and promotion, we strengthen the culture of great games in Denmark and help create more meaningful gaming experiences for players.

We support game developers who challenge conventions and contribute to a diverse and vibrant range of Danish games. Talent development is a key priority for us, and we work to ensure the industry has access to skilled, versatile professionals who can drive the future of Danish game development.

We believe original games enrich people’s lives and strengthen Denmark’s position as a leading gaming nation. Follow our work on this page or on LinkedIn to learn more about Danish gaming culture.

Background

NIMBI was established in August 2024 as an independent institution under the Danish Ministry of Culture. As of 1 January 2025, responsibility for the Games Scheme was transferred to us from the Danish Film Institute.

Our main task is to promote the development of Danish digital games and create better framework conditions for the entire games industry - among other things through seven key focus areas.

The law of NIMBI and seven key focus areas

The law on Nimbi Gamelab - Denmark's Institute for Game Development came into force on January 1, 2025 and has been adopted by a broad political majority, which in addition to the Government consists of Danmarksdemokraterne, Socialistisk Folkeparti, Det Konservative Folkeparti, Enhedslisten, Dansk Folkeparti, Radikale Venstre and Alternativet. The Minister of Culture Jakob Engel-Schmidt has taken the initiative to establish NIMBI with the hope that NIMBI will, among other things, contribute to greater awareness of Danish digital games.

The law describes the Game Institute's seven focus areas:

GRANTS

Provide grants for the development, production and launch of Danish digital games, with a focus on digital games with artistic and cultural qualities.

KNOWLEDGE

Support the promotion and spread awareness of Danish digital games in Denmark and internationally.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT

Support talent development related to Danish digital games through e.g. educational and industry partnerships.

KNOWLEDGE AND OVERVIEW

Create knowledge and overview through data collection and analysis about Danish digital games and the state of the games industry.

PROMOTION

Disseminate knowledge about Danish digital games to the public in an accessible and relevant way.

DIALOG WITH THE INDUSTRY

Ensure an ongoing dialog with the games industry and key user groups about the institute's activities.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Support children and young people's access to Danish digital games based on Danish culture and Danish values.

Background

The story behind the name?

NIMBI - The Danish Institute for Game Development is named after the first Danish computer game, published in 1963. The game, NIMBI, was designed by Piet Hein and developed by Regnecentralen, and it can still be played today on the Danish Computer History Association website.
